Following the media backlash that trailed its planned shutdown of electricity across Bonny Island on Valentine’s Day, the Bonny Utility Company (BUC) says it has rescheduled it for a yet-to-be-announced date.

Kristina Reports had reported on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 that residents of the Island viewed the planned shutdown on a day globally recognized as Lovers’ Day as “insensitive” and “an attack on businesses”.

Apparently, this forced the hand of the BUC, which in an unsigned statement on its Facebook page, announced the cancellation of the shutdown.

“We wish to inform you that the planned power outage scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, 14th February, 2024, as previously communicated, has been postponed.”

“This is to allow ample time to complete necessary preparation on work for commissioning of the redundant power line.”

“A new date for the outage will be communicated to you promptly once it has been finalized. We appreciate your understanding and patience in this matter and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”

The company had earlier announced power outages in Bonny on Monday, February 12, 2024 and also on Wednesday, February 14, 2024 from 9am to 4pm in Bonny.

It stated that the power outage was for “serious and major maintenance work commencing on Wednesday 14th February 2024 which will in turn affect the activities of residents”.
