Akatikpo Park Community says it suspects foul play in the handling of the recent oil spill at the Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal (BOGT) which has denied her people access to their economic wellbeing having adversely impacted the waterways.

Spokesman of the Community, Fidelis Jumbo told Kristina Reports on Thursday, November 13, 2025 in Bonny, Rivers State that Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited has refused any form of engagement even though Akatikpo Park Community is the appurtenant and directly impacted community to the spill site.

He further accused Renaissance of neglect and marginalization, asserting that a purported joint investigation was reportedly conducted without involving the host community to the facility.

On his part, a former Deputy Leader of the Bonny Legislative Assembly, Dipinye Jumbo lamented that his community members have been subjected to undue suffering due to the impact of the spill, calling on the relevant authorities to come to the aid of the community.

Also speaking, the Special Assistant to the Bonny LGA Chairman on Environment and Industrial Matters, Dr Akie Hart said the oil spill has adversely affected the environment, destroying aquatic life and polluting the waterways, thus rendering the people of the area incapacitated economically.

He stated that the Chairman of LGA, Abinye Pepple has had to appeal to the community to exercise patience while the matter is being investigated, adding that the Chairman’s focus remains the peace and progress of the LGA.

On his part, Chairman of the Bonny LG Committee on Environmental Management, Charles Brown regretted the ravaging effects of the oil spill on the Akatikpo Park Community, stressing that there is urgent need to avail the people with relief materials and carry out remediation of the impacted environment.

Efforts to reach Renaissance to react to the allegations by the Community proved abortive as its spokesman has yet to respond to enquiries by Kristina Reports as at the time of this report.
