The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects in connection with the recent violent clashes in Umuchigbo-Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, which resulted in the killing of two brothers and the burning of several houses and vehicles.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, who on Thursday visited the scenes of the attacks, described the incident as “senseless, avoidable, and deeply regrettable.”

He immediately directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to commence a thorough and discreet investigation into the crisis.
“All those found culpable will be brought to justice,” Giwa declared. “We have ordered a sustained manhunt for the fleeing suspects and will ensure that the law takes its full course.”
According to preliminary findings, the clashes stemmed from a long-standing leadership tussle that had divided the community. The violence reportedly began on October 29, 2025, when two brothers were allegedly murdered by one faction, triggering a retaliatory attack the following day that saw five residential buildings and several vehicles set ablaze.
“This tragic loss of lives and destruction of property could have been avoided,” the police statement read. “We call on all sides to embrace dialogue, calm, and cooperation with security agencies.”
The Police Commissioner also appealed to traditional rulers, community elders, and all stakeholders in Umuchigbo-Nike to support peace efforts and avoid further escalation of the conflict.
“I urge the warring factions to sheathe their swords and allow justice to prevail,” Giwa said. “Violence under any guise will not be tolerated in Enugu State.”
Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed that normalcy has been restored, with officers maintaining a strong presence in the community to prevent further unrest.
“The Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to public safety and the protection of lives and property,” Ndukwe stated. “Those behind these criminal acts will not go unpunished.”
The Command urged residents with useful information to assist investigators and reaffirmed its resolve to bring lasting peace to Umuchigbo-Nike.
