The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed four officers found to have been involved in the killing of Anthony Obodo, a fresh graduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), in a development that underscores the Command’s stated resolve to sanction personnel accused of serious misconduct.
Obodo, an indigene of Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, had recently graduated from the University of Port Harcourt and was awaiting mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) when his life was cut short.
The four officers dismissed by the Nigeria Police Force are Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fabian Kpeanabari, Inspector Solomon Nworgu, Corporal Alfred Louis and Corporal Michael Ejekwu.
The officers were paraded at the Rivers State Police Command Headquarters, where the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, addressed journalists on the disciplinary action and the circumstances surrounding the case.
Adepoju expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the dismissal of the officers as an appropriate disciplinary measure in response to their involvement in the incident.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the protection of lives and property and assured residents that the Command would continue to take steps to maintain law and order across the state.
According to the Commissioner, the dismissal also demonstrates the Command’s position that misconduct, abuse of office, excessive use of force and violations of the law by police personnel will not be tolerated.
The CP further disclosed that the dismissed officers would be charged to court to face further legal proceedings in connection with the death of Obodo.
The disciplinary action comes amid continued public concern over alleged cases of police misconduct and the need for greater accountability within law enforcement agencies.
For the family and community of the deceased, the development represents an important step in the search for justice for a young man whose future was reportedly cut short shortly after completing his university education.
The Command urged residents to continue to cooperate with the police and assured the public that personnel found to have acted outside the law would be held accountable.
