The Bonny Integrated Recruitment Centre (BIRC) has extended its drug and alcohol abuse awareness campaign to construction sites in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, taking its prevention message directly to employees in industrial workplaces.
The latest phase of the campaign saw the BIRC engage staff of Daewoo Engineering and Construction Limited (DECN) at the Hi-OPS project site inside the Bonny Oil and Gas Terminal (BOGT), where the organisation stressed the need for a healthy, disciplined and safety-conscious workforce.
The BOGT, which is being operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, serves as a crude oil export terminal.
Chairman of BIRC, Adawari Jumbo, led the engagement, accompanied by BIRC’s Public Relations Officer, Godswill Hart, with officials of Daewoo, including its Community Liaison Officer (CLO) on the project, Michael Pepple, present.
Speaking to the workforce, the BIRC team highlighted the dangers associated with drug and alcohol abuse, particularly in industrial environments where concentration, coordination and sound judgment are critical to personal and workplace safety.
The campaign, according to a statement on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, signed by BIRC’s Public Relations Officer, Godswill Hart, is built around three key objectives: education, prevention and protection.
Workers were cautioned against substance abuse, and informed that its implications transcend an individual’s personal choices, noting that its consequences can extend to workplace safety, productivity, relationships and public health.
The awareness campaign identified impaired judgment, workplace accidents, absenteeism, disciplinary action, damaged relationships and potential loss of employment, among the consequences that could arise from drug and alcohol abuse.
BIRC also encouraged workers to take personal responsibility for their wellbeing and to seek appropriate help where necessary, stressing that prevention begins with awareness and informed decision-making.
The organisation said a productive workforce must equally be healthy, disciplined and committed to workplace safety, particularly in industrial settings where individual actions can have consequences for colleagues and the wider community.
The outreach forms part of BIRC’s broader effort to take its awareness campaign beyond public spaces and into workplaces where substance abuse could pose serious occupational safety risks.
The organisation urged workers to reject drug and alcohol abuse and make choices that protect their lives, careers and workplaces.
“Say no to drugs and alcohol abuse. Protect your life. Protect your career. Protect your workplace,” the BIRC statement said.
