FG Declares Tuesday, August 25, 2026 Public Holiday for Eid ul Mawlid

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a nationwide public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

This was announced on Friday, August 21, 2026, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the occasion. He said Eid ul Mawlid is a time to reflect on values of compassion, humility, and service to humanity, qualities he noted Nigeria needs at this time.

“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the statement read. “These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”

Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to use the period to pray for peace and unity in the country, and called for celebrations to be done with restraint and respect for one another. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace nationwide.
