A fire outbreak has occurred around the Soku Oil and Gas Field in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The blast is suspected to have occurred at 9:15pm on Saturday, March 22, 2025 around the Orashi River axis on a gas pipeline owned by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG).
The impacted pipeline reportedly connects from the Soku Gas Plant, which is said to be operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), down to Abua/Odua LGA of the State.
The Soku Gas Plant is part of the Soku Oil and Gas Field, which is owned by Eni, NNPC, Shell and TotalEnergies.
The field consists of the Soku Flow Station, Soku Gas Plant, the Oil Rim Development Project, oil and gas wells and several kilometres of delivery pipelines.
As at the time of this report, Eni, NNPC, Shell or TotalEnergies were yet to make a statement on the issue or respond to enquiries on the incident.
There are fears that the fire outbreak will negatively impact gas supply to NLNG gas liquefaction plant in Bonny Island.
Enquiries sent to the Nigeria LNG by Kristina Reports to ascertain the level of impact this incident would have on Nigeria’s gas export and domestic gas production which the company is mainstreaming, was yet to be responded to as at the time of this report.
Recall that the Nigeria LNG is leading the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewal and clean energy through its gas revolution.
So far, through the efforts of the NLNG, Nigeria has achieved significant milestones in its quest to transition its energy consumption from fossil fuels, to the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for domestic consumption.
It was unclear if any containment measures have been deployed ad at the time of this report.
