The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP, has conducted an induction exercise for the third batch of trainees under its sponsored Commercial Diving and Underwater Welding in fulfillment of the commitment it embarked upon couple of months ago.
Recall that the Project announced the programme late 2025 with a timetable proposing a three-batch training for qualified youths from across Ogoni communitiess, and has concluded with two batches already.
In conjunction with Zulugee Intel Services and the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), the Batch III trainees’ orientation, the final batch of the programme, took place on Thursday, August 13, 2026 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The induction exercise is meant to welcome the new trainees, ease their transition into the workplace, and equip them with the basic knowledge, tools, and rules needed to perform their tasks safely and effectively in the course of the training.
During the event, the Project Coordinator in HYPREP, Nenibarini Zabbey, in his remarks, enlightened the audience on the vision of the Ogoni cleanup, noting that it is a transformative journey aimed at building capacity and not only about environmental remediation.
He added that the Project’s approach is people-centric with multifaceted human capital interventions aimed at creating opportunities for sustainable development among Ogoni youths and women.
The HYPREP boss particularly charged the trainees to maximise the opportunity by remaining discipline, commitment and actively participation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the training.
“It is important that each person maximises this real opportunity and considers the fact that you are privileged to have this training opportunity,” he said.
He disclosed that the Commercial Diving and Underwater Welding Training was part of efforts to equip participants with high-demand skills that could provide opportunities in the blue economy, oil and gas, and maritime sectors.
On his part, the Training consultant with Zulugee Integrated Services Ltd., Walter Amadi, commended the Project Coordinator for his passion and commitment to the Ogoni Clean-up initiative.
Addressing the trainees, Amadi urged them to maintain a good conduct throughout the training and make the most of the opportunity provided them, describing it as life changing.
The event also featured the presentation of medical fitness certificates by the Director of Technical Services, Damian Aguiyi, including helpful speeches delivered by both the Head, Sustainable Livelihoods, Josephine Nzidee, and the trainer to encourage the trainees.
Present at the event were heads of various units of HYPREP, representatives of the Petroleum Training Institute and Zulugee Intel Services, training consultants, and relevant stakeholders involved in the training programme.
