The Imo State Government has approved the appointment of 332 local government and ward prosperity officers ahead of the Saturday, September 26, 2026, local government council elections.
The appointments comprise 27 local government prosperity coordinators and 305 ward prosperity officers, with one coordinator assigned to each of the state’s 27 Local Government Areas and one officer for each of the 305 electoral wards.
The appointments were contained in a statement issued by the Office of the Governor through the Chief Political Adviser, dated Friday, September 11, 2026.
The development came on the same day the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) reaffirmed that elections into the offices of the 27 LGA council chairmen and 305 ward councillors would hold on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
According to the commission, the election will take place across 4,758 polling units in the 27 LGAs of the state.
The commission stated in its press release dated Friday, September 11 that, “elections into the Offices of the 27 LGAs Council Chairmen and 305 Ward Councillors, will hold on Saturday 26th September, 2026 in the 4,758 polling units across Imo State.”
ISIEC also urged all registered political parties to take note of the election date and make the necessary preparations, referring to its September 18, 2025, “360 days” notice of election issued pursuant to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended.
The commission said consultations with critical stakeholders were still ongoing as preparations for the election continued.
The Saturday, September 26 poll will involve all 27 local government areas, 305 electoral wards and 4,758 polling units across Imo State, figures that are consistent with the state’s established electoral structure.
The appointment letter listed the 27 local government appointees across areas including Mbaitoli, Ngor Okpala, Owerri North, Ahiazu Mbaise, Aboh Mbaise, Nwangele, Ideato South, Owerri West, Oru West, Ideato North, Isu, Ihitte Uboma, Njaba, Oguta, Nkwerre, Orsu, Onuimo, Obowo, Isiala Mbano, Okigwe, Ehime Mbano, Ezinihitte, Oru East, Owerri Municipal, Ikeduru, Orlu and Ohaji/Egbema.
The list was signed by Chief Perry Obara, Special Adviser/Chief Political Adviser to the Governor on political affairs.
Meanwhile, the electoral commission is expected to continue its engagement with political parties and other critical stakeholders before the Saturday, September 26 election.
The commission’s latest notice places the election less than two weeks away, with voters and participating political parties expected to make final preparations for the grassroots poll.
ISIEC previously conducted the 2024 Imo local government elections across the same 27 LGAs, 305 wards and 4,758 polling units.
