The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Imo State Council, has disowned the Association of Imo State-Based Journalists, AIBJ, warning the public against dealing with the group or persons claiming to represent it.
The council made the declaration in a press release signed by its Chairman, Ifeanyi Nwanguma, on Monday, August 3, 2026, following what it described as activities by persons parading themselves as members or representatives of AIBJ.
The NUJ said AIBJ is not recognised, registered or affiliated with the Union, stressing that the group does not operate within its established structure.
The council stated, “The said group is not recognised, registered or affiliated with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).”
It explained that recognised affiliates and professional bodies within the NUJ structure include the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE, and Correspondents’ Chapel, among others recognised under the Union’s established structure.
The council consequently declared that it would not accept responsibility for any transaction, representation, financial dealings, loss or other consequences arising from dealings with AIBJ or individuals purporting to represent the group.
The NUJ further directed all registered and practising members of the Union in Imo State to immediately disassociate themselves from the activities of AIBJ.
According to the council, any member found acting contrary to the directive may face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the Constitution and regulations of the NUJ.
The council also urged members of the public to exercise caution and disregard any claim by AIBJ or its representatives that the organisation is recognised or affiliated with the NUJ Imo State Council.
The NUJ maintained that the disclaimer was issued as a formal notice to the general public and a caveat to its members, making its position on the association clear.
