The Lagos State Government says it has paid a cumulative N168.2 billion to more than 48,000 retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme since its introduction in 2007.
The state government disclosed this on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, while responding to concerns raised by some retirees over pension payments and welfare.
According to the government, the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) has also disbursed N92 billion in accrued pension rights to more than 25,000 retirees between May 2019 and August 2026. The accrued rights cover the gratuity and pension components owed to retiring public officers.
Kristina Reports learnt that the disclosure comes amid renewed concerns from some Lagos pensioners, who have been demanding further adjustments to their pension benefits. The retirees reportedly gave the state government an August 31 deadline to implement a proposed pension increase, threatening further protests if their demands are not addressed.
The Lagos Government, however, highlighted several measures it said were introduced to strengthen pension administration and improve the welfare of retired workers.
The state said pension contribution rates were increased in 2020, with employers contributing 10 per cent and employees eight per cent, while a policy was introduced to expedite gratuity payments to sick pensioners.
In July 2024, the government said it released N5 billion to 1,963 retirees, which it described as a major intervention that cleared outstanding pension obligations under the Contributory Pension Scheme at the time.
For retirees under the Defined Benefits Scheme, the state said more than 10,000 pensioners received a N25,000 wage award between December 2023 and February 2024. It added that pension increases of 20 per cent and 28 per cent followed in March 2025.
The government further said Lagos matched the Federal Government’s N32,000 pension wage increase for its Defined Benefits Scheme retirees in May 2026, a move it said increased the state’s pension wage bill by more than 100 per cent.
LASPEC also disclosed that it had paid more than N4 billion to 1,862 retirees in 2026, with another N1 billion planned for about 700 additional retirees within the following week.
Despite the government’s figures, the latest concerns from pensioners show that the debate over retirement benefits in Lagos is not over, with affected retirees seeking timely implementation of pension adjustments and improved financial security after years of public service.
