Obunku Ugbo in Ndoki, Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, has been hit by another devastating flood following heavy rainfall over the weekend, leaving residents facing severe hardship and renewed fears over their homes and livelihoods.
The latest flooding comes just weeks after government officials visited the area to assess its environmental challenges.
On August 7, the Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, led engineers and other officials on an assessment visit to Obunku and neighbouring communities affected by flooding and erosion.
The government said it would urgently intervene and consider drainage channels to control floodwater.
With the latest downpour worsening the situation, residents are now appealing to the Abia State Government and other relevant authorities to move quickly from assessment to practical relief.
They are calling for urgent assistance for affected families while seeking lasting measures to reduce the community’s vulnerability to repeated flooding.
The appeal also extends to political leaders and other stakeholders from Ukwa East and Ndoki to visit the affected community, see the situation firsthand and support ongoing government efforts.
For residents of Obunku Ugbo, the immediate priority is clear: relief, protection and a lasting solution before another rainfall causes even greater damage.
