Impact Super-Subs: Nigerian Duo Olakunle Olusegun and Kparobo Arierhi Shine in European Cup Duty

It was a sensational mid-week for Nigerian forwards making maximum impact off the bench, as Olakunle Olusegun and Kparobo Arierhi took center stage across Europe with clinical substitute appearances.

In Russia, Olusegun put the exclamation mark on a 6-1 demolition for FC Rostov while in Norway, 19-year-old sensation Arierhi extended his red-hot scoring streak, netting a dramatic late equaliser against his parent club.

Olusegun Caps Off Rostov’s Russian Cup Dominance

Nigerian international Olakunle Olusegun continued his red-hot form, coming off the bench to put the final polish on FC Rostov’s emphatic 6-1 victory over Akron Togliatti in the Russian Cup Group D clash at the Rostov Arena.

Introduced in the 81st minute for Imran Aznaurov, Olusegun needed just ten minutes to leave his mark.

Deep into stoppage time, the forward calmly finished off Rostov’s evening, scoring the sixth and final goal of a one-sided encounter.

Rostov blew the game open early, tearing through the visitors with three goals inside the opening 22 minutes:

6′ — Ronaldo Cesar opens the scoring (1-0)

16′ — Daniil Shantaliy doubles the lead (2-0)

22′ — David Semenchuk makes it three before half-time (3-0)

The hosts maintained their relentless tempo right after the restart, with Ivan Komarov (46′) and Danila Prokhin (48′) stretching the cushion to 5-0 within three minutes of the second half.

Arseniy Dmitriev pulled a consolation goal back for Akron Togliatti in the 53rd minute, but Olusegun had the last word with his late strike.

The victory firmly establishes Rostov at the top of Group D with 12 points, opening a four-point gap over second-placed Akron Togliatti.

For Olusegun, the goal marks his second consecutive game on the scoresheet—following his crucial Russian Premier League strike in a 2-0 win over Lokomotiv Moscow—bringing his total tally for the season to 3 goals and 3 assists across all competitions.

Arierhi Scores Against Parent Club as Sogndal Fall in Norwegian Cup

In Norway’s Norgesmesterskapet, 19-year-old Nigerian prodigy Kparobo Arierhi delivered a bitter-sweet performance for Sogndal, scoring against his parent club Lillestrøm in a narrow 2-1 third-round defeat at Åråsen Stadion.

Entering the match as a 61st-minute substitute, Arierhi produced an instant impact.

After Henrik Melland had given Lillestrøm the lead in the 66th minute, the on-loan teenager displayed razor-sharp instinct to level the ties in the 75th minute, converting an assist from Emmanuel Mensah.

Though Fredrik Gulbrandsen restored Lillestrøm’s advantage just a minute later to end Sogndal’s cup run, Arierhi’s goal underscored his remarkable development during his loan spell.

Despite the loss, the teenager’s streak remains intact:

4 Consecutive Games: Arierhi has now scored in four straight outings, netting 5 goals in that span.

7 Goals Total: Takes his season tally to 7 goals across all competitions (6 in 11 league appearances).

Recent Form: Before his cup strike, he scored a brace against Egersund (3-3), a late winner against Raufoss (2-1), and a composed chipped finish against Kongsvinger (3-1).
