In a touching moment for African women’s football, legendary defender Osinachi Ohale has officially hung up her boots for the Nigerian national team, bringing a glorious 16-year international career to a close.
The 34-year-old veteran confirmed her decision in an emotional farewell message released on Friday, September 25, 2026.
Ohale leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, having earned 86 senior caps, represented Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cups, and lifted the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) trophy an astonishing five times.
“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,” Ohale shared. “I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”

Ohale’s rise in Nigerian football began on the youth international circuit, where she starred for the Falconets team that made a historic run to the final of the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
That same year, she made her senior debut for the Super Falcons, quickly establishing herself as a cornerstone of the national team’s defense.
Throughout her tenure, she featured in four World Cup tournaments across Germany (2011), Canada (2015), France (2019), and Australia & New Zealand (2023).
Her crowning World Cup moment arrived during the 2023 tournament in Brisbane. With Nigeria trailing co-hosts Australia in a tense Group B match, Ohale put her body on the line, heading home a vital 65th-minute goal to put the Super Falcons ahead in an eventual 3-2 victory.

Her final continental title came at the 2024 WAFCON (staged in Morocco in July 2025), where Nigeria rallied to defeat the host nation 3-2 in a dramatic final to reclaim their crown.
Rather than fading into the background, Ohale remained a focal point of the squad until her final days in green and white. In her last major campaign at the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco under coach Justine Madugu, the stalwart defender started and played every minute of all five matches for the Super Falcons.
