Over 3,000 Military Personnel from 25 African Nations Gather in Abuja for African Military Games
More than 3,000 military personnel from 25 African nations have convened in Abuja, Nigeria, for the African Military Games Abuja 2024 (AMGA).
The flagship event is designed to foster camaraderie, enhance physical fitness, and strengthen regional cooperation among the armed forces across the continent.
Kicking off with a spectacular opening ceremony, the Games will showcase 19 sports disciplines, such as athletics, football, basketball, wrestling, shooting, and taekwondo.
The event, organized by the African Military Sports Organization (OSMA) in collaboration with Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence, highlights the unifying role of sports across the continent.
At a press conference held before the competition, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, lauded the Games as an opportunity to promote cooperation and enhance military relations across Africa.
“From November 18 to November 30, 2024, this event provides a unique opportunity for our armed forces to showcase their skills, foster camaraderie among participants, and strengthen military cooperation and partnerships.”
General Musa also emphasized the cultural diversity on display, with participating countries presenting traditional dances, military drills, and a flyover by the Nigerian Air Force during the parade of nations.
General Musa highlighted the importance of hosting the Games in Abuja, describing it as a reflection of Nigeria’s dedication to peace, security, and the advancement of sports.
He also pointed out that thorough preparations, including infrastructure upgrades and logistical planning, had been made to ensure the event’s success.
Encouraging Nigerians to rally behind the Games, he said: “We urge citizens and friends to come out in large numbers and support our armed forces. Let’s demonstrate the renowned hospitality of Nigerians. We are excited for what promises to be a remarkable and unforgettable competition.”
Taking place until November 30, 2024, the African Military Games provide a platform for military personnel to compete, share best practices, and deepen connections across the continent and underscores the power of sports to bring together diverse nations, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.
