Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has donated N50 million to the newly established Shanahan University in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Obi, who is a former Governor of Anambra State, made the donation on Monday, October 14, 2024 at the official opening ceremony of the University on Onitsha, Anambra State.

Obi emphasized the increasing significance of knowledge over oil, declaring that knowledge is the currency of the future.

He praised the founder and Archbishop of Onitsha Arch Diocese of the Catholic Church, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke, for his visionary leadership, asserting that education is critical for humanity’s advancement.

“Our focus as a society should be on preparing for tomorrow,” Obi stated, commending the church for its longstanding dedication to establishing high-quality educational institutions worldwide.

He urged the public to support the church’s efforts in promoting education.

Archbishop Valerian Okeke expressed his gratitude to Obi, reminiscing about the extensive support he provided to missionary-run institutions during his tenure as governor.

He also announced that free internet access will be available to all students until January 2025.

Vice Chancellor of Shanahan University, Professor Obi Oguejiofor, spoke about the institution’s ambition to become one of Nigeria’s leading universities.

He revealed that all of the over 200 pioneer students are currently enjoying tuition-free education for this academic session.
