Rivers United continued their impressive run this season with yet another solid home victory, defeating Ikorodu City 2-0 in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 7 fixture on Sunday evening.
First-half goals from Samson Olasupo and Chinemerem Ugwueze secured all three points for Finidi George’s side at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The encounter began at a frantic pace, with both teams bringing high energy and physical intensity to the pitch. However, the hosts broke the deadlock in the 19th minute.
Olasupo was played through on a swift counterattack, outmuscling his marker before calmly slotting past the rushing goalkeeper to give Rivers United the lead.
Just before the stroke of halftime, Chinemerem Ugwueze doubled the advantage. Ugwueze latched onto a well-placed cutback from Shola Oladunjoye—who was making his full debut—to make it 2-0 heading into the break.
The second half proved to be a more cagey affair. While both sides carved out scoring opportunities, neither was able to find the back of the net before the final whistle.
Sunday’s clash was the fifth meeting between the two clubs. Head-to-head, Ikorodu City still hold two wins and a draw, but the Pride of Rivers have now claimed two victories over the Lagos Boys.
With this result, the Port Harcourt outfit extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches (four wins, three draws) while maintaining a perfect home record.
Meanwhile, Ikorodu City suffered their second defeat of the campaign, alongside two wins and three draws.
Rivers United remain second on the NPFL table with 15 points, while Ikorodu City sit ninth with 9 points.
