The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee (CPC) to coordinate activities for the celebration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary in the state.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held in Port Harcourt on Monday September 7, 2026, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dagogo Wokoma, said the committee was established to effectively plan, coordinate, and execute all approved programmes lined up for the national celebration.
He stressed the importance of early preparations, noting that the government would leave no stone unturned in ensuring a successful and memorable commemoration of the country’s independence.
Wokoma disclosed that activities marking the anniversary will commence with a Juma’at Prayer Service on Friday, September 25, 2026, followed by an Inter-Denominational Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
According to him, the celebration will culminate in a grand finale on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Nigeria’s Independence Day.
The SSG commended the security agencies and other relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for their continued collaboration with the state government in ensuring hitch-free celebrations over the years.
He charged members of the committee to bring their wealth of experience and professional expertise to bear in the discharge of their responsibilities.
