The Rivers State Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, has conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the flooding at Community Secondary School, Rumuapara,
The Inspection which took place on Thursday September 17, 2026, followed videos and pictures circulated online showing parts of the school premises affected by floodwater.
The joint team was led by the Commissioner for Education, Peters Nwagor, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mina Tele-Ikuru, and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Ishmael Tomonialadieokuma, alongside directors and other officials from both ministries.
The officials assessed the extent of the flooding and its possible impact on the safety of students and teachers, school infrastructure, and teaching and learning activities.
The Ministries also examined the drainage around the school and began efforts to identify the underlying causes of the flooding, with a view to developing a lasting solution rather than relying on temporary measures. Meanwhile, a detailed report is expected to guide immediate, medium- and long-term interventions at the school.
The Ministry of Education says its priority is to restore a safe and conducive learning environment at Community Secondary School, Rumuapara, while also taking steps to protect the school against future flooding.
The Rivers State Government however, reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare and education of children across the state.
