RSU Matriculates 11,083 Students, Highest in University’s History

Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, has set a record by matriculating 11,083 students, the highest number since the institution’s inception in 1980.
The milestone was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, during the 43rd matriculation ceremony at the Convocation Arena, Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo on Friday, March 28, 2025.
Addressing the newly admitted students, the Vice-Chancellor outlined his vision for the university, which includes enhancing academic programs to meet global standards, strengthening research capacity, promoting innovation, and improving infrastructure to support teaching, learning, and research.
“Our vision is to transform into a world-class, innovative and inclusive institution; fostering a culture of excellence, creativity, and social responsibility; through re-engineering of the university’s academic, administrative, and community engagement frameworks to ensure that they are student-centric, faculty-driven, community-oriented and responsive to the needs of the 21st century”.
He emphasized that matriculation is a significant academic ritual marking the formal induction of students into the university system.

This particular ceremony, though the 43rd in the history of RSU, was the first under his administration, making it a specialised moment for both himself and the institution.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming RSU into a world-class, innovative, and inclusive institution.
To achieve this, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the need for partnerships with industry, government, and other stakeholders to promote community engagement and entrepreneurship.
He also highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to ensure transparency, accountability, and excellence within the university.
Welcoming the fresh students, Prof. Zeb-Obipi congratulated them on their successful admission, emphasizing the competitive nature of the process.
A total of 29,107 candidates applied to RSU as their first-choice institution in the 2024 JAMB examination. When the university set its cutoff mark at 190, the number of eligible candidates reduced to 16,172. Out of these, 15,348 candidates registered for the Post-UTME, and 15,014 eventually took the test.
After a rigorous selection process, 11,083 candidates were offered admission into various faculties as follows:

Administration and Management 1,152, Agriculture 222, College of Medical Sciences 1,855, Communication and Media Studies1,379 Education 501, Engineering 1,983, Environmental Sciences 281, Humanities 66, Law 250, Medical Laboratory Sciences 108, Sciences 1,915 and Social Sciences 776
Prof. Zeb-Obipi reminded the new students that gaining admission was just the first step in their academic journey. He urged them to take their studies seriously, emphasizing that RSU is committed to academic excellence and ethical standards.
“As you begin your academic journey, I urge you to be curious, ask questions, seek answers, and explore new ideas. Take full advantage of the numerous opportunities available to you, including research collaborations, mentorship programs, internships, and community service projects”.
He also warned against involvement in social vices, reiterating RSU’s zero-tolerance policy for drug abuse, cultism, sexual harassment, examination malpractice, sorting, extortion, stealing, and indecent dressing.
“This university has zero tolerance for drug abuse, cultism, sexual harassment, examination malpractice, sorting, extortion, stealing, indecent dressing and other social vices. Please be warned as you will be shown the way out if you are found violating the university’s rules and regulations”.
Recognizing the challenges that come with university life, the Vice-Chancellor assured students of the university’s commitment to providing necessary support systems, including academic advisors and student support services.
“To our parents and guardians, I extend my gratitude for entrusting us with the education and well-being of your wards. We understand the significant investment you have made in their future, and we assure you that we will do everything possible to support their growth and success,” he said.
He also charged members of the university community, including faculty and staff, to see themselves as mentors and role models who must shape the minds and characters of the next generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi closed his speech by inviting all students, faculty, and stakeholders to work together in creating a vibrant and supportive learning environment.
“As you begin this journey, embrace a spirit of innovation, collaboration, and community. RSU is a place where you will not only acquire knowledge but also develop the skills and character needed to lead and serve society. I look forward to witnessing the incredible things you will achieve”. With this record-breaking matriculation, RSU continues to cement its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading universities, setting new standards in academic excellence, inclusivity, and student empowerment.
