The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged the National Assembly to refrain from introducing legislative proposals that undermine democracy, the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Sunday, SERAP called on lawmakers to uphold their constitutional responsibility to protect and promote democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
The organisation said legislative power should not be used to narrow legitimate democratic participation, restrict civic space, or silence critical voices including journalists, activists, civil society organisations and opposition figures.
SERAP warned that as the country approaches the 2027 elections, there must be no attempt to pass bills that criminalise dissent, shrink civic space, or intimidate voters and political opponents.
According to the organisation, the period leading to elections should be used to deepen democratic values and not to erode them through repressive laws.
The group stressed that fundamental freedoms such as the rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly must be guaranteed and protected by law.
It added that the National Assembly should focus on electoral and governance reforms that promote transparency, accountability and public trust instead of measures that weaken democratic institutions.
SERAP further stated that laws should not be weaponised to target critics and independent media under the guise of regulation. It urged lawmakers to prioritise legislation that advances good governance, protects citizens’ rights and strengthens Nigeria’s democracy ahead of 2027.
