It was an eventful Wednesday evening for Nigerian stars in Europe and the Middle East, headlined by Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi ending his long wait for a debut goal for Olympiacos, and forward Peter Olayinka delivering clutch heroics in Saudi Arabia.
Onyemaechi Opens Account in Olympiacos Rout
Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi announced his arrival on the scoresheet in spectacular fashion, scoring his first goal of the season to help Greek giants Olympiacos cruise to a commanding 4-0 victory over AE Larissa in the Greece Cup Group Stage (Round 1) at the AEL Arena.
Making just his sixth appearance of the campaign, the 27-year-old left-back produced a composed left-footed strike from distance that nestled into the bottom-right corner.
Onyemaechi’s 54th-minute goal—assisted by an Armando González header—brought an end to a painstaking 42-match wait for his maiden strike since joining Olympiacos from Boavista during the 2025 winter transfer window.
Beyond his goal, Onyemaechi delivered a dominant box-to-box display, creating three chances (the joint-most by any player on the pitch) before being substituted in the 63rd minute for Nair Tiknizyan.
González had opened the scoring for the visitors in the 34th minute via a Konstantinos Fortounis assist before Gustavo Sá doubled the lead five minutes after the restart.
Onyemaechi made it 3-0 shortly after, and Joel Roca completed the four-goal rout in the 66th minute.
Olayinka Rescues Al-Wehda With 95th-Minute Equaliser
Over in Saudi Arabia, Nigerian forward Peter Olayinka stole the spotlight with dramatic, late-game heroics to rescue Al-Wehda from the brink of defeat against Damac FC.
Trailing 2-1 deep into stoppage time in their Saudi First Division League Round 3 fixture at the King Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium, the 30-year-old forward popped up in the 95th minute to smash home an equaliser and salvage a 2-2 draw.
Damac had taken a first-half lead through Saad Al Qahtani in the 26th minute. While Ibrahim Al Harbi leveled for Al-Wehda past the hour mark, Hassan Rabea reclaimed the lead for Damac six minutes later, setting up a tense finish.
Just as defeat looked inevitable, Olayinka stepped up to score his first goal for Al-Wehda since his summer move from APOEL Nicosia, securing a vital point for his new club.
