Taiwo Awoniyi, Nigeria and Nottingham Forest forward, is reportedly in an induced coma after undergoing urgent surgery for a serious abdominal injury sustained during a Premier League match against Leicester City on May 11, 2025.
The injury occurred in the 88th minute of the match, which ended in a 2-2 draw at the City Ground. Awoniyi collided with the post while trying to reach a cross from Anthony Elanga during a challenge with Facundo Buonanotte. The cross from Elanga was allowed to advance on goal, even though he was clearly offside.

Following the confirmation of the injury’s severity on Monday, the 27-year-old was rushed to the hospital. Initial reports indicate that the surgery was successful, although the injury could have been life-threatening if left untreated.
The club has confirmed that Awoniyi is “recovering well” after the procedure.
Induced comas are typically employed to protect the brain from further damage, particularly in cases of severe trauma or injury.
