Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi announced his return to peak form in emphatic fashion on Saturday evening, scoring his first Premier League goal of the season to inspire Coventry City to a dominant 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The 29-year-old’s 37th-minute strike ended a frustrating two-month goal drought dating back to August 25, when he registered a goal and an assist against Plymouth in the EFL Cup.
Having gone six matches without finding the net, Awoniyi’s clinical finish brought his season tally to two goals and an assist across all competitions while fueling an impressive team performance from Frank Lampard’s side.
Coventry set an aggressive tempo from the opening whistle and rewarded their home fans after just 17 minutes. A dangerous cross into the Sunderland 18-yard box created complete chaos among the visitors’ defense.
Defender Hume failed to clear the danger, allowing the loose ball to fall straight to Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, who calmly stroked a low shot into the far bottom corner to open the scoring.
Twenty minutes later, Awoniyi doubled the Sky Blues’ advantage through sheer grit and tenacity.
The Nigerian international aggressively pressed Luke O’Nien to win back possession near midfield, drove deep into the penalty area, and unleashed a low shot across Sunderland goalkeeper Roefs.
A slight deflection off a defending leg helped steer the ball into the bottom corner, sending the home crowd into raptures.
Coventry picked up right where they left off after the interval, extending their cushion to 3-0 in the 52nd minute.
Jack Rudoni found space outside the box and decided to test his luck from range; his effort took a wicked deflection off defender Alderete, wrong-footing Roefs completely as the ball ricocheted into the back of the net.
Sunderland managed a consolation goal in the 67th minute when French midfielder Enzo Le Fée calmly converted from the penalty spot, sending Coventry goalkeeper Rushworth the wrong way.
However, it proved to be little more than a silver lining on an otherwise disappointing evening for the visitors.
The victory marks Coventry City’s third win of the campaign, lifting Frank Lampard’s squad up to 15th place in the league table with nine points.
Meanwhile, Sunderland remain rooted to the bottom of the table, still searching for answers as Coventry celebrate both a pivotal three points and the timely resurgence of their star Nigerian forward.
