American filmmaker and actor Tyler Perry has said he has no plans to marry, citing his concerns about divorce and the financial consequences he has observed among people around him.
Perry made the disclosure during a recent appearance on a talk show while discussing his personal life, relationships and his latest film, Why Did I Get Married Again?, which premiered on Netflix on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
The 57-year-old, who has never been married, was asked whether marriage remained part of his plans and gave a firm response before explaining the thinking behind his decision.
Perry said his position was not based on rejecting love, but rather on his concerns about what can happen when a marriage ends in divorce.
“I’m never marrying.”
“And it’s actually the divorce pandemic that is happening.”
“Everybody that I know that is doing well went broke because of divorce,” Perry said.
He described what he called a “divorce pandemic” as a major factor in his decision, pointing to people he knows who were financially successful before losing substantial wealth after their marriages ended.
The filmmaker’s comments therefore reflected a personal financial concern rather than a claim that divorce inevitably leaves everyone financially devastated.
Perry has built a major entertainment career around stories involving marriage, relationships, family and the challenges couples face, making his decision not to marry a notable contrast with recurring themes in his work.
His latest project, Why Did I Get Married Again?, continues that connection to relationship stories as the third instalment of the film franchise that began with Why Did I Get Married? in 2007.
