Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 each year, is a day of national pride and solemn reflection in Nigeria.
It is the day when the men and women of the armed forces who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, safeguarding the country’s unity, peace, and security are honoured.
The celebration is marked on the 15th of January every year following the conclusion of the Nigerian Civil War on January 15, 1970. The conclusion of this war was a pivotal moment in the country’s history that underscored the importance of reconciliation and national unity.
In Abuja, the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day was marked with a wreath-laying ceremony at the National Arcade.
The event was graced by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who stood in for President Bola Tinubu, as the special guest of honour, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, among other notable officials.
The ceremony featured military parades, a solemn moment of silence, and prayers to honour fallen soldiers.
These activities highlighted the bravery and dedication of military personnel, reminding citizens of the sacrifices made for the nation’s stability.
Vice President Shettima emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting veterans and the families of fallen heroes, ensuring that their sacrifices are not forgotten.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day goes beyond honoring the military. It fosters a sense of patriotism and unity among Nigerians. It reminds the nation of the importance of peace, reconciliation, and support for those who risk their lives for the greater good.
The day serves as a call to action for better welfare programs for retired service members and their families while encouraging citizens to reflect on the courage of those who fight for a stable and secure Nigeria.
By observing this day, Nigerians collectively pay tribute to the enduring legacy of their armed forces and reinforce the value of unity in the face of challenges.
