Bonny Kingdom is undergoing a significant transformation as buildings on the right of way of the road expansion project are being demolished to pave the way for the kickstart of the project.
This development, which is aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing transportation in Bonny Island, has sparked mixed reactions among residents, business owners, and landlords.

Kristina Reports visited the affected areas on Tuesday, February 18, to gauge public sentiment regarding the project.
Owners of impacted properties (OIP) on the right of way were seen carrying out the demolitions and modifications to their properties ahead of the March 1, 2025 commencement date as announced by the Bonny Kingdom Development Committee (BKDC) weeks ago.
While some residents expressed concerns over the disruptions caused by the demolition, others welcomed the development, seeing it as a necessary step toward progress.
One of the affected individuals, Mieinye Allison shared his perspective on the ongoing changes, acknowledging the temporary inconvenience, nonetheless emphasizing the long-term benefits of the project.

“Development has come to my community, I’m happy. I won’t say it’s affecting us adversely; everybody knows that roads are an essential infrastructure that brings progress.”
“Most of the structures around here are kiosk structures. This is an opportunity for some of us to reset and build the way we should have done it before now.”
Despite the challenges, Allison expressed optimism about the future, noting that he feels privileged to witness such a transformative project in his lifetime.
“I’m glad to be part of those who witnessed great development during my time, and it’s something I’d be grateful for when I’m old,” he added.
However, not all residents share the same enthusiasm. Some business owners and landlords worry about the financial burden of relocation and the impact on their livelihoods.
They argue that while development is crucial, adequate compensation and support should be provided to those who are being displaced.
David William-Jumbo shared his frustration. In his words, “the demolition began 29th January till now, the breaking and rearranging, tools and equipment for rebuilding costs almost 18million for the six shops demolished, but I was given just 8million naira.”
The road expansion project is expected to ease transportation, boost economic activities, and improve the overall livability of Bonny Kingdom.
As the demolition and reconstruction continue, residents remain hopeful that the relevant authorities will address their concerns and ensure that the development benefits all.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of the BKDC, Amairigha Hart expressed delight over the patriotic posture of the property owners, commending them for their individual sacrifices being made in favour of the infrastructural development of the Island.
He noted their concerns but appealed for understanding as the demolitions and modifications were necessary to the success of the project, asserting that the project, when completed, will significantly improve the Bonny skyline.
