In a decisive move to stabilize its internal leadership, the Labour Party (LP) has appointed Nenadi Usman as the Chairman of its newly formed Caretaker Committee.

The appointment was unveiled on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 during a high-stakes stakeholders meeting held in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Labour Party, Nenadi Usman

Usman, a seasoned politician and former Minister of Finance, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

She previously represented the Kaduna South Senatorial District in the National Assembly from 2011 to 2015 and is now tasked with steering the 29-member committee toward resolving the party’s current leadership challenges.

The committee’s mandate is clear: within 90 days, they are to reorganize the party, restore unity, and lay the groundwork for future electoral successes.

A key aspect of their mission will be organizing a convention to elect new leadership across all levels, from the ward to the national stage.

Supporting Usman in this critical endeavour is the immediate past Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Darlington Nwokocha, who will serve as the committee’s Secretary.

Nwokocha, who was the Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly between June and November 2023, is expected to play a pivotal role in the committee’s activities.

The meeting in Umuahia was a significant gathering of the party’s top echelon, hosted by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.

It saw the attendance of major party figures, including LP’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate, Datti Ahmed, Senator Victor Umeh, and Lagos State governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.

Their presence underscored the importance of the caretaker committee’s task in charting a new course for the Labour Party.

As the committee embarks on this crucial mission, all eyes will be on Senator Usman and her team to see how they navigate the challenges ahead and whether they can unify the party in time for the upcoming electoral battles.
