There is excitement in Bille Kingdom as commuters traveling home for the Yuletide season will benefit from a reduced transport fare, thanks to the Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Agiriye Harry.
Chief Press Secretary to the Degema LGA Chairman, Gloria Harry announced this on Friday, November 29, 2024 via a statement she personally signed and made available to the Media in Degema, Rivers State.
According to her, the reduced fares was consequent upon a deal brokered by Degema LGA Chairman with members of the Marine Outboard Drivers Association of Bille/Ke waterways who visited him in his office in Degema.
This fare, which was reduced from N6,000 to N5,000, was agreed upon on Friday, November 29 following extensive discussions on strategies to enhance waterway security during and after the festive season.
Agiriye Harry assured the Association that the necessary measures would be implemented to ensure the safety of commuters traveling to coastal communities for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
He also announced that the Local Government Council would provide life jackets to these communities as a preventative measure against water accidents.
Furthermore, he pledged to collaborate with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to address security challenges on the waterways comprehensively.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Flag Sanipe had informed the LGA Chairman about the security concerns faced by boat operators and commuters on the Bille route, urging immediate intervention.
