The Jumbo Major House of Bonny Kingdom in Rivers State has warned that no aspect of its lands should be used as final dump site for refuse evacuation by the Bonny Local Government without proper consultation.

Chairman of the Jumbo Major House Elders Council, Wari-Alabo Sodienye Jumbo, who issued this warning during the week in a telephone chat with Kristina Reports, advised the government to explore the business aspect of waste management.

Chairman, Jumbo Major House Elders Council, Wari-Alabo Sodienye Jumbo,

Wari-Alabo Jumbo, who was reacting to news of refuse accumulation across Bonny and subsequent evacuation by the Bonny Local Government, pointed out that waste management is now a wealth creating venture that should be explored.

He expressed concern that the Bonny Local Government did not disclose to the public where it was disposing off the waste collected from different locations around the LGA.

“If I may ask, how or where do they finally dispose off this waste in Bonny?”

“Land is scarce, I hear there are burrow pits, mostly in Jumbo lands. We shouldn’t allow them use the place as dump site as it’ll render the environment useless.

“Let them ensure they use modern technology for final disposal of waste.”

NO FULL DISCLOSURE ON WASTE DISPOSAL: Sole Administrator, Bonny LGA, Kingsley Banigo

“But let me observe that waste disposal and not waste distribution is a serious business, and when you consider Bonny terrain it becomes more challenging.

“So, emphasis here is waste disposal, where the waste is no longer a hazard, it can even be turned to wealth.

This is where the professionals come in.”

“The sole administrator is still new, he’s yet to find his feet. He should be advised to engage professionals or consultants.”

“NLNG is close by, he should liaise with them (Waste Management Department) and see how they can be of help to him because the sanitation department of the Council may have some limitations.”

Concerns have been raised over the strategy of the Bonny Local Government in disposing waste in the area with residents around the current final dump site being used by the Local Government raising alarm over threats to their health, wellbeing, and livelihood.

Jumbo Major House owns large swathes of land translating to about half of the contiguous topography known as Bonny Town.
