D’Tigers Secure Quarter Final Spot, Awaits Winner between Senegal/South Sudan

The Nigerian men’s national basketball team, D’Tigers, secured direct qualification to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Men’s AfroBasket Championship after a 99-90 win over Cameroon on Sunday, August 17, 2025 in their final group game.

The D’Tigers finished top of Group B after winning all three games. In their first game against Madagascar, it was a 77-59 victory. In the second game against defending champions Tunisia, it was an 87-66 victory and yesterday’s game against Cameroon, which was the final group game ended 99-90.

The Madagascar game saw Nigeria struggle in the first half but rejuvenated in the second, winning by 18 points. The Tunisia clash was a different ball game, Nigeria looked a lot more convincing, winning by 21 points. In the final game, Nigeria controlled proceedings, had a strong defensive shift, and led by as many as 34 points, scoring 15 three-pointers – the most by any team in the tournament so far – but the momentum dropped in the fourth quarter, and the lead was reduced to nine.

Nigeria had six players score in the double digits. Josh Okogie led the D’Tigers with 16 points. Caleb Agada scored 15, Stan Okoye finished with 14, Christian Mekowulu and Ike Nwamu each contributed 12, and Martins Igbannu scored 10.
