In a landmark moment for Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, the 2025/2026 Student Union Government (SUG) election marked a triumphant step forward in the institution’s democratic journey, concluding on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, with remarkable success and fervor.

The election, held in the iconic 1,000-seat auditorium, not only showcased the institution’s commitment to democratic values but also elevated student participation to new heights.

A Resounding Vote of Confidence: High Turnout and Transparent Process

The day unfolded with an impressive turnout of students, all eager to engage in a process that promised transparency, fairness, and the true reflection of their collective voice. Over 1,200 students enthusiastically participated, underscoring the palpable energy and trust invested in the leadership election. Despite minor hiccups during accreditation, the swift intervention of university authorities ensured a smooth and uninterrupted process, reinforcing the integrity of the election.

Security measures were paramount, with joint forces from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police, and the Polytechnic’s internal security team safeguarding the polling process. Independent observers, including Comrade Alfred Jacinta Chinedu, the Zone F Secretary-General of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), lauded the election as transparent, credible, and a beacon for other institutions to emulate.

The Leaders of Tomorrow: Empowering Student Voices

In an exciting culmination of the election, the results were declared in a jubilant atmosphere, with Nwosu Desmond emerging as the President-elect, securing 340 votes. His win was a clear testament to the trust placed in him by his peers, defeating formidable opponents such as Daniel Promise, who garnered 270 votes. Ogbonna Esther, who ran unopposed for Vice President, secured an overwhelming 573 votes, further cementing her popularity and the mandate for leadership.

Other executive positions, including Treasurer, Director of Finance, and Director of Publicity, were also fiercely contested, with each candidate receiving resounding endorsements. This marked a significant shift from previous years where electoral challenges, including manipulation and candidate imposition, often clouded the process. The students’ vote was a powerful reminder of their desire for genuine representation and progressive leadership.

A Message of Hope and Future Collaboration

Dr. Saint Paul Christopher, the Dean of Student Affairs, expressed pride in the successful election, calling it a true reflection of the students’ will. He praised the election for being a pivotal moment in the Polytechnic’s democratic evolution, which, he noted, had been championed by the Rector’s commitment to upholding academic freedom and transparent student governance.

Dr. (Mrs.) Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe, the Rector, reinforced this sentiment, emphasizing that the Polytechnic remains steadfast in its mission to empower student leadership. Her administration’s 11-Point Agenda continues to serve as a foundation for academic excellence, inclusive governance, and student-centric reforms.

A Glimpse Into the Future: Student Leadership in Action

As the newly elected executives prepare to take office, expectations are high. Students anticipate a leadership that not only represents their collective aspirations but also fosters meaningful dialogue between student government and the institution’s management. The promise of collaboration, inclusivity, and progress is poised to create a dynamic academic environment where students feel both empowered and heard.

With the successful conclusion of the 2025 SUG election, Federal Polytechnic Nekede stands as a shining example of how democracy, transparency, and student involvement can reshape institutions, laying the foundation for future leaders who are poised to lead with integrity and vision.
