In a powerful narrative of perseverance and transformation, Executive Secretary of the Institute of Export Operations and Management (IEOM), Dr Ufon Udofia was among the proud recipients of doctoral degrees conferred at the University of Port Harcourt’s PhD convocation held during its 35th Convocation Ceremony and 50th Anniversary celebration.

Udofia, who was awarded a PhD in International Trade and Development Finance, reflected on a journey that began far from academia.

Executive Secretary of the Institute of Export Operations and Management (IEOM), Dr Ufon Udofia

“I used to sell newspapers in Aba, trekking from Okpor Hill to Ekaakpara. I never knew I would get to this height, I sold newspapers to the likes of Tony Elumelu and top bankers at the time. That boy from the street is now a PhD holder. It’s a story of grace, grit, and God’s faithfulness.”

With a first degree in Marketing and a second in International Trade and Development Studies, Udofia explained that his desire to lead effectively in the export sector drove him to deepen his knowledge.

“The world is moving towards development-based trade strategies. So, combining development and finance in my doctoral work became necessary”.

His dissertation focused on Cross-Border Trade and Sustainable Development in Selected West African Countries, exploring complex regional issues such as small arms proliferation, carbon emissions, and the socio-economic impact of informal trade activities on children at border towns like Seme, Aflao, and Lakonj.

Drawing from his own experience using those borders in export practice, he recommended reforms including the adoption of a single-window trade system to enhance documentation, reduce informality, and boost revenue generation for governments.

“I believe this research will directly impact my work and the industry at large, if the single-window system is implemented, it will reduce leakages and bring more structure to regional trade.”

Udofia’s story resonated deeply at the convocation, which drew dignitaries from across the country, including the former Governor of Katsina State, Umaru Bello, the First Lady of Nigeria, Remi Tinubu, and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, amongst others

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Owunari Georgewill, praised the graduates for their resilience and reminded them of their responsibility to use their knowledge for national development.

“Today, we do not merely confer degrees, we honour rigorous inquiry, resilience, and the pursuit of truth. Go forth and illuminate the world”.

For Udofia, the ceremony was more than a celebration, it was a message to the next generation.

“On one of my international trips to South Korea, I discovered that the founder of Daewoo Motors also started as a newspaper vendor. That story gave me courage.”

“I want young people to know that no matter where you start, you can go far. Stay focused, work with all your heart, and never stop pushing.”

As UniPort celebrates its golden jubilee, stories like that of Ufon Udofia stand as a testament to the transformative power of education, the dignity of humble beginnings, and the extraordinary potential of a determined spirit.
