Residents of Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State who have been battling with the menace of flooding either caused by torrential rainfall or overflow of the shores during high tide can now heave a sigh of relief.
This is sequel to the inauguration of a seven-man Technical Committee on Drainage, Flood Management, and Control by the Chairman of Bonny LGA, Abinye Pepple on Thursday, September 11, 2025 in Bonny, Rivers State.

A press release by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Wisdom Chapp-Jumbo disclosed that members of the Technical Committee include: Dr. Fubara Dan-Jumbo; Chairman, Tamunotonye Jumbo; Secretary, and Alali Irimagha, Emmanuel Hart, Timothy Green, James Igulazo and Deegbara Austin, as members.
Inaugurating the Committee, the Bonny LGA Chief Executive charged the members to be thorough and professional in their work to provide a permanent solution to flooding and drainage challenges in the area.
He emphasized that his administration’s commitment to adopting a holistic and sustainable approach, rather than the temporary “fire brigade” methods used in the past, asserting that the committee, made up of seasoned professionals, has been mandated to study the issues comprehensively and submit actionable recommendations within 30 days.
“As a responsible government, we considered it necessary to constitute a technical committee of professionals to address the recurring flood situation in Bonny. This committee is to carefully review the challenges and propose lasting solutions that will stand the test of time,” he said.
He further revealed that the Local Government is exploring partnerships with reputable companies such as Julius Berger to ensure a standardized and professional execution.
In his response, the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Fubara Dan-Jumbo, expressed gratitude to the LG Council Chairman for the confidence reposed in him and other members of the Committee, describing the assignment as a community service to the people of Bonny.

He stressed that the flooding situation is an emergency, given that Bonny lies below sea level, and assured that the committee will deliver sustainable solutions.
“We have a responsibility to engage stakeholders and propose short, medium, and long-term measures. Immediately, we will begin implementing short-term interventions by mobilizing excavators to open designated drainages and canals, demonstrating that this administration is hitting the ground running, even as we prepare our comprehensive report within 30 days,” Dr. Dan-Jumbo stated.
