In a bold step to strengthen Nigeria’s climate response and scientific innovation, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has partnered with Rivers State University (RSU) to advance research, training, and capacity building in meteorology and climate science.
The partnership was officially sealed at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), setting the stage for collaborative efforts in critical areas such as meteorology, climatology, maritime studies, and data sharing.

The agreement also prioritises the downscaling of Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) to better serve the South-South region, which is particularly vulnerable to climate-related challenges.
Speaking at the ceremony, NiMet’s Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, highlighted the strategic value of the partnership.

“This MoU with Rivers State University is a vital step toward strengthening our observation network and early warning coverage, allowing for joint climate research and resilience”.
On his part, RSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, commended NiMet’s leadership in expanding access to climate services.

“This partnership will offer our students invaluable practical exposure, foster impactful research, and contribute meaningfully to building climate resilience across the South-South zone”.
The agreement marks a significant leap in integrating academic expertise with national climate service delivery. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to harnessing scientific knowledge to enhance environmental sustainability and protect vulnerable communities in Nigeria.
