Five years ago, in the thick of the COVID-19 lockdown, Nigerian music got a new sound that would redefine its pop scene.
That sound came from a Port Harcourt-born artist named Omah Lay, and it came through his debut EP titled Get Layd.

At just 22, Stanley Omah Didia introduced himself as a fresh voice with something different, music that felt warm, real, and deeply emotional.
Get Layd was not just another Afrobeats project; it was a personal diary set to melodies that pulled listeners in and made them feel something.
The five-track EP reflected the many layers of a young man raised in the tension of Rivers State.
From the conflict within to the yearning for love, Omah Lay sang about romance, pain, ambition, and vulnerability in a way few others had done before him.
Tracks like Damn showed a man coming to terms with his flaws and still being loved through them.
“She loves me like damn, like damn damn damn,” he sang repeatedly, lost for words but rich in emotion.
In Lo Lo, he offered all his love with melodies borrowed from Highlife and blended with soulful drums and strings to give a live, heartfelt feel.
On You, Omah Lay’s romantic promises, willing to go to war and risk it all, came with melodies that brought the emotions to life.
And while Afrobeats often featured smooth talkers, what set Omah Lay apart was how honest and raw his songs felt.
He did not only sing about love.
In Bad Influence, he shared pain just as deeply as he shared joy.
And in the EP closer, he left no room for confusion, mimicking the sound of a woman’s pleasure as he sang, “She go ye ye ye ye ye,” proving he could capture even the most intense moments in words and melodies.
Omah Lay’s gift lies in how he blends English, Pidgin, and South-South street language with catchy beats to bring listeners into his world.
He is not just a singer, he is a storyteller, a poet who feels deeply and wants his audience to feel with him.
Today, Get Layd remains a bold, refreshing, and beautiful body of work.
Five years on, it stands as the project that announced a new kind of pop star, one who isn’t afraid to be soft, strong, and everything in between.
Omah Lay didn’t just release music, he gave us feelings, and Get Layd is the masterpiece that started it all.
