In what could be viewed as a definite reprimand for a younger sibling, the Bonny Youth Federation, which is the apex youth body in Bonny Kingdom, has cautioned the Finima Youth Congress to desist from acts and utterances that are alien to Ibani way of life.

This reprimand was contained in a statement on Sunday, January 12, 2025 by its Leader, Anthony Banigo, and General Secretary, Omoni Sylvanus, and made available to the Press In Bonny, Rivers State.

PRESS STATEMENT

The attention of the Bonny Youth Federation (BYF) has been drawn to a reckless and misleading publication by the Finima Youth Congress (FYC), alleging an intended violent protest by the youths of Bonny Kingdom.

Ordinarily, we would not dignify the Finima Youth Congress, a younger and less experienced organization, with a response. Just as an elder brother does not frolic with an unruly younger sibling on the playground, so too does the BYF stand above petty distractions. However, at the risk of dignifying falsehood and fabrications, and for the benefit of the public and to dispel any fears incited by the FYC’s misinformation, we find it necessary to respond.

  1. A SHAMEFUL DEPARTURE FROM DECORUM

The easiest way to recognize a recalcitrant child is by their disrespectful words toward their parents. The Finima Youth Congress’s press statement reeks of gross irresponsibility and a complete abandonment of Ibani customs and traditions. Their tone and language in addressing the revered Se-Alapu and the Bonny Chiefs Council are not just disgraceful but an affront to the very essence of our cultural heritage.

The Bonny Chiefs Council is no ordinary institution. Established in the early 18th century, it is second only to the Amanyanabo of Bonny Kingdom in the traditional leadership hierarchy. This council has, for centuries, been the backbone of Bonny Kingdom’s negotiations with European powers, its business successes, and the treaties that helped shape the Old Rivers Protectorate, Southern Nigeria, and, ultimately, the Nigerian nation.

It is therefore appalling that the FYC, whose Chieftaincy Houses are not only a creation of the King of Bonny but are also well-represented in the Bonny Chiefs Council, would stoop so low as to disrespect this august body. Such behavior reflects poorly on the Finima Youth Congress and underscores their immaturity.

  1. MISINFORMATION ON PEACEFUL PROTESTS

Assuming, without conceding, that the youths of Bonny Kingdom plan a peaceful protest against any entity acting contrary to the Kingdom’s interests, by what authority does the FYC presume to question or obstruct such a lawful expression of discontent?

Protests are a globally recognized right, and history bears witness to numerous peaceful demonstrations across the world against perceived injustices. Ironically, the FYC itself has, in recent times, staged protests on issues it deemed unfavorable to the Finima community. Is it now the FYC’s position that what is acceptable for them is forbidden for others?

At this point, we call on the security agencies to take note of the veiled threats embedded in the FYC’s statement. Such rhetoric often signals intentions to incite unrest. The Bonny Youth Federation urges the security agencies to be proactive in addressing any actions that may threaten the peace and security of Bonny Kingdom.

It is worth emphasizing that the FYC’s baseless allegations of violence are not only inflammatory but also a diversionary tactic. Their statement serves as a warning that those who cry wolf often intend to create chaos themselves.

From time immemorial, Finima has been an integral part of Bonny Kingdom, with its three Chieftaincy Houses Tobin,Brown and Attoni—represented in both the Bonny Chiefs Council and the Bonny Youth Federation. The FYC must recognize that no amount of propaganda or revisionist agenda can alter this historical reality.

We urge the youths of Bonny Kingdom to remain calm and resolute, even in the face of provocation. Our traditional institutions, supported by responsive Federal, State, and Local Governments, are well-equipped to safeguard our interests and uphold justice.

The Finima Youth Congress is hereby advised to cease its divisive antics and refrain from misleading the public with spurious claims. Bonny Kingdom’s unity is paramount, and any actions to undermine it will be met with legally firm and collective resistance.
