Rivers State House of Assembly Passes Transportation Bill And Management Response Bill Into Law

In fulfilment of its promise to revamp the transport sector and infuse confidence in the system, the Rivers State House of Assembly has passed the Transportation and Emergency Management Agency Bill 2024 into law.

The bill, which is currently awaiting the assent of the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker, Oruibienimigha Timothy, and Majority Leader of the House, Sokari Goodboy, respectively.

The passage of the bill followed its first and second readings, the consideration by the committee of the house before its third reading during plenary on Friday, September 22, 2024 at the hallowed chamber.

According to the Speaker of the Assembly, Victor Oko-Jumbo, the transportation bill will help in tackling insecurities and has potentials in service delivery.

“The transport bill has the potential to tackle ‘one chance’s issues through commercial vehicle profiling, enhancing security, revenue and service delivery.”

He also explained that the Emergency Management Bill was domesticating the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency’s efforts at addressing natural disasters, fires, accidents, and emergencies in the State.

It could be recall that public hearings had been held for both bills, where stakeholders and the general public made relevant suggestions leading to the outcome of what was presented in today’s plenary.
