In furtherance of its humanitarian outreach, the Rotary Club of Grand Bonny in partnership with nine other Rotary Clubs visited Amariari Fishing Settlement in Finima Community, Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State where donations were made to school children.

The delegation was led on the visit, which took place on Saturday, August 3, 2024 by the newly installed 7th President of the Rotary Club of Grand Bonny, Sotonye Wilcox.

She stated that the donations, which included 100 rain coats and 100 shoes, were made to pupils of Stars of the Slum Academy, Amariari Fishing Settlement in Finima Community, Bonny LGA, informing that it was a joint Food, Medical and Clothing (FMC+) project of the Rotary Club.

Wilcox further informed that the outreach aligns with three areas – maternal and child health, disease prevention and treatment and basic education and literacy – of Rotary’s seven key areas of focus.

“This project touches three areas of Rotary seven key areas of focus. Maternal and child health – Children protected from the rains will stay healthy. Disease prevention and treatment- Protection from rain will reduce the likelihood of catching a cold and other illnesses. Basic education and literacy- Healthy children can remain in school and learn better.

On the visit with the Rotary Club of Grand Bonny were Rotary Club of Bonny Island, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Creekview, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Atlantic City, Rotary Club of Choba Uniport, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Skyfield, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Medical Towers, Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Orbit and Rotary Club of Port Harcourt East.

She also stated that other Rotary areas of focus are water and sanitation, economic and community development, supporting the environment, as well as, peace and conflict prevention and resolution.

Responding, the founder and Proprietor of the school, Faith Tom-Babs thanked the various Rotary Clubs for the donation, regretting that children in the slums and remote areas were hardly remembered for donations like this, especially, from humanitarian organizations as a result of their location.

She noted that even though the pupils were on holidays, they came out to school in their masses to receive the donations and their excitement could be felt by all present, urging the Rotary movement to sustain its efforts in reaching out to the less privileged in the society.
