Across Abuja, football fans and even non-football fans are beaming with joy as the victorious Super Falcons of Nigeria touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport this afternoon, fresh from their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The record-breaking team, who clinched their 10th WAFCON title with a dramatic 3-2 comeback against hosts Morocco on Saturday night, arrived to cheers from excited fans who had gathered since morning to welcome their champions home.

Nigerians in the Federal Capital Territory say they cannot wait for the highly anticipated victory parade, scheduled to take the team through major districts of Abuja in an open-roof bus, before a grand reception at the Presidential Villa.

“This is history,” said Caroline, a resident of Garki, who plans to witness the parade route. “They have made us proud once again, and today Abuja belongs to the Super Falcons.”

According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the team’s route will cover Airport Road, Berger Junction, Maitama, and Wuse Market, giving residents across the city a chance to catch a glimpse of the coveted trophy.

NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, confirmed the arrangement yesterday, saying:

“We are making arrangements to have a trophy parade with the players and their coaches in an open-roof bus. This will afford a good number of people in those areas a rare sight of the Women AFCON trophy.”

Fans are particularly excited about the symbolic reception at the Presidential Villa, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) will host the champions.

For many Nigerians, this victory represents more than just a sporting achievement. “These women have shown resilience, strength, and the spirit of champions,” said Emeka Okafor, a football fan.

“Today, Abuja is not just welcoming heroes; we are celebrating queens of African football.”
