Tragedy struck in the bustling Onitsha Main Market on Wednesday, June 12, when a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot during a botched arrest operation allegedly carried out by rogue security operatives.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspects, believed to be acting in a security capacity, opened fire indiscriminately while attempting to apprehend an unidentified individual. In the chaos, a stray bullet struck and killed the teenager, whose identity has not yet been released.

Police operatives from the Onitsha Main Market Division, acting on tip-offs and with the help of local traders, swiftly apprehended two suspects believed to be connected to the shooting. One automatic pump action gun was also recovered from the scene.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikoiye Orutugu, has condemned the incident, describing the shooting as “avoidable and unprofessional.” He has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation.

“This unfortunate loss of life is deeply regrettable,” said Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command. “The Command remains committed to ensuring justice is served.”

Investigations are ongoing as the police urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
