The Chairman of Abua/Odual Local Government Area, Owolobi Ofori has made a deft move to prevent what could have degenerated into a possible unrest between Elok Community in Okpeden-Abua and Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Company Limited (SEEPCO).

The intervention followed a petition from Elok Community wherein it expressed disapproval over the activities of the company in the area.

In pursuit of a speedy resolution of an avoidable crisis, Ofori met today with representatives of SEEPCO and leaders of the community to address the concerns raised.

SEEPCO had also been embroiled in a similar issue in 2018 when Oghora Community also in Abua/Odual LGA accused the company of attempting to access their land without an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Paramount Ruler of Oghora Community, Chief Akot Joe, had claimed then that an official of the company had invaded the community with military personnel and issued a “shoot-at-sight” threat during protests, a development that heightened tension and distrust for the company in the LGA.

During today’s meeting, the Abua/Odual LGA Chairman stressed the need for dialogue, mutual respect, and due process in resolving disputes.

He said his administration is committed to maintaining peace and creating a conducive environment where businesses operate responsibly without undermining the rights of host communities.

At the end of the engagement, Ofori outlined steps to rebuild trust and strengthen cooperation between Sterling Exploration Limited and Elok Community. Both parties agreed to work with the Local Government Council to maintain peace and progress.

The Chairman promised that his administration will continue to promote fairness, stability, and development across all communities in the area.
