LG Chairman Flags Off Optimized Maternal, New-Born, Child Health Week in Bonny

The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Abinye Pepple has flagged off the Optimized Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (OMNCHW) at the Primary Health Centre, Finima, Bonny LGA.

The OMNCHW, which holds across the State was organized by the Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board (RSPHCMB), avails beneficiaries routine immunization for children, free delivery, Vitamin A supplementation, deworming and nutritional assessment.

Other services include antenatal care (ANC), postnatal care (PNC), family planning services, HIV testing and counselling, health education and counselling and treatment of minor ailments amongst others.

Vice Chairman of the LGA, Ibinyefagha Alabere, who represented the Chairman, at the event on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, was accompanied by the Supervisor for Health and Environment, Hayford Banigo, among other officials of the administration.

Mrs. Alabere, who led the delegation on an extensive inspection of ongoing service improvements at the facility, visited key health service points, including the antenatal care unit, nutrition hub, upgraded cold-chain storage area, and the newly installed incubators dedicated to the care of premature infants.

In a demonstration of strong support for routine immunization, the Vice Chairman actively participated in the day’s vaccination exercise by personally administering polio vaccines to children.

This symbolic action reinforced the Abinye Pepple led administration’s commitment to reducing preventable childhood illnesses and strengthening primary healthcare delivery across the LGA.

Speaking during the event, the Vice Chairman reiterated the government’s unwavering alignment with the Rivers State-led health programme.

She noted that Bonny Local Government Council is strategically deploying resources to improve maternal, neonatal, and child health indicators within Bonny and its adjoining communities.

The launch event was attended by officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Health, the State Primary Health Care Management Board, and community representatives, all of whom commended the synergy between state and local authorities in enhancing health outcomes at the grassroots level.

The flag-off ceremony marks another significant milestone in Bonny LGA’s ongoing efforts to domesticate state-led health interventions and deliver tangible, people-centred benefits to its residents.
