Nigeria has again entered its famous “Detty December” season, a month-long festival of concerts, carnivals, nightlife and cultural events that brings millions of people together across major cities.
The period, which stretches from early December until the New Year, attracts Nigerians at home and in the diaspora who travel into the country to reconnect with family and enjoy the busy holiday entertainment calendar.

Detty December has grown into a major cultural and economic moment since the mid-2010s and is now recognised globally for its high-energy music shows, street carnivals and lifestyle events.
The movement became widely popular after 2016 when Nigerian singer Mr Eazi used the phrase to brand several concerts, a trend that later spread across entertainment hubs in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and other cities.
One of the biggest attractions every year is Fly time Fest, previously known as Rhythm Unplugged, which has hosted top Nigerian and international acts since 2004.
Calabar Carnival in Cross River State also remains a major December highlight with its colourful parades, street dances, costumes and cultural displays that stretch through the festive period.
Lagos maintains its position as the entertainment capital of the season with club takeovers, all-night parties, themed events, and the Lagos Countdown Festival which leads into New Year celebrations.
Marie Claire Nigeria and other lifestyle platforms have reported that December hosts fashion shows, art exhibitions, food fairs, film premieres and numerous outdoor festivals.

The season is also known for heavy nightlife activities such as lounges, clubs and beach fronts run daily events driven by DJs, comedians and performing artists.
Detty December directly boosts the economy through tourism, hospitality, transport and local businesses that benefit from the increased holiday traffic.
The period especially attracts “IJGBs” a popular slang meaning “I Just Got Back,” used for Nigerians returning from abroad for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
A Lagos-based events curator, Chidinma Okezie, said that the season has become more than entertainment but a cultural homecoming.
“This is the only time of the year when the whole country feels like one big festival,” Okezie said.
Major concert promoters say Nigerians should expect packed venues, security improvements and stronger organisations compared to previous years.
A music promoter, Samuel Irabor, said the energy around December continues to grow every year.
“People save all year for Detty December because they know the experience is unmatched,” Irabor said.
Analysts say the Detty December culture has positioned Nigeria as a major stop for global entertainment tourism, especially for those seeking Afrobeat-driven holiday experiences.
The 2025 edition is expected to be one of the busiest in recent years as artists, promoters and festival organisers roll out full event schedules across the country.
