The Jewels of Rivers who missed the chance at an eighth league title last season, finishing second in the Super Six by one point, have made clear their goals to do the double – winning the league and defending the Federation Cup title.
The seven time champions backed up their ambition by getting the signature of Coach Tosan Blankson and the recruitment of 14 new players.
Ibom Angels on the other hand, return to the top flight after securing promotion last season, and also have a new coach in Edwin Okon in the duggout, one who would be looking to have a strong start to the season in a bid to maintain their top-flight status.
Speaking ahead of the South-South derby clash, Rivers Angels Head Coach, Tosan Blankson, promised that his side will not underate Ibom Angels as he acknowledged Ibom Angels’ coach, Edwin Okon, as a seasoned tactician, having previously coached Rivers Angels. “Edwin Okon is a good coach, and we won’t underrate him or his team, The gaffer said. “
Blankson also hammered on his team’s intention to focus on their game plan, aswell as adhering to the rules of football. “We’ll play according to the rules, and our pattern of play won’t change.”
Having watched Ibom Angels during the championship playoff in Calabar, Blankson admitted that his opponent’s squad may have undergone changes. “The championship is different from the league. They may have recruited new players.”
Captain’s word.
