The Nigerian film industry is buzzing with excitement as Queen Lateefah, a drama led by actress and producer Wumi Toriola, prepares to hit cinemas nationwide on September 27, 2024.
The highly anticipated release is already commanding attention across entertainment circles, with trailers, teasers, and reviews setting the stage for what many predict will be one of the year’s defining Nollywood films.

Directed by Adeoluwa Owu and written by Anthony Kehinde Joseph, Queen Lateefah tells the gripping story of Lateefah Adeleke, a woman who escapes the struggles of her poor upbringing by crafting a flawless high-society persona.
But when she falls in love with wealthy businessman Jide Rhodes, played by Kunle Remi, her carefully constructed world begins to unravel as her secrets resurface.
The film blends English, Pidgin, and Yoruba, reflecting Nigeria’s diverse cultural landscape.
With a 129-minute runtime, it promises both depth and drama, taking audiences through a rollercoaster of ambition, deceit, romance, and identity.
The cast list reads like a Nollywood hall of fame, featuring Femi Adebayo, Nancy Isime, Elvina Ibru, Lateef Adedimeji, Bimbo Manuel, and Broda Shaggi, alongside Toriola and Remi in lead roles.
Critics have already praised Toriola for stepping away from her usual feisty on-screen persona to deliver a deeply emotional performance.
Entertainment media across Nigeria have been abuzz since the official trailer dropped in late August, with promotional campaigns painting the film as a “grass-to-grace” tale that speaks directly to the dreams and struggles of many Nigerians.

It has also attracted international attention, with screenings already lined up in Germany and other cultural showcases.
Early box office forecasts are optimistic. Projections suggest that Queen Lateefah could repeat or even surpass the massive success it would later record, figures that would eventually place it among Nollywood’s all-time highest earners. Within weeks of its release, the film went on to gross over ₦333 million, cementing its status as the highest-grossing Nollywood film of 2024.
As the premiere date draws closer, the buzz around Queen Lateefah continues to grow, with audiences eager to see whether the film will live up to its hype and redefine Nollywood’s box office standards.
For Wumi Toriola, who not only stars in but also co-produced the project alongside Ope Ajayi, the movie marks a bold leap into cinema history.

With its star power, relatable storyline, and strong early reception, Queen Lateefah is more than just another Nollywood release, it is a cultural moment, poised to leave an indelible mark on Nigeria’s film industry.
