In continuation of its efforts to mitigate the impact of flooding, the Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee has distributed relief materials to residents of Oyigbo and Gokana Local Government Areas who were affected by recent flooding.

The relief materials were presented on Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at the Central Medical Stores in Port Harcourt, Rivers State to representatives of the two LGAs by the committee.

Speaking during the event, the State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Professor Ngozi Ordu reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to providing timely assistance to communities affected by natural disasters.

The Deputy Governor, who was represented by the Vice Chairman of the Committee and Head of the State Civil Service, Dr. Inyingi Brown, said the relief materials were provided as part of a deliberate intervention strategy to cushion the effects of the flood on vulnerable households.

Prof. Ordu emphasised the importance of proper documentation, accountability, and fair distribution, urging officials from the benefiting Local Governments to ensure that the items reach individuals and families most impacted by the disaster.

“We expect the Councils to verify that the items are complete and to ensure they are promptly and transparently distributed to the affected population.”

Responding on behalf of their Councils, the representative of the Oyigbo Local Government Chairman, Michael Onyedinma, and the Chief of Staff to Gokana Local Government Chairman, Baribor Dee, expressed appreciation to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Flood Committee for extending help to their communities at such a critical time.

The distribution exercise is part of a broader initiative by the Flood Prevention and Management Committee, which has been working across various LGAs to provide relief materials and implement preventive measures aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding.
