The National Union of Bonny Students (NUBS) has accused the management of the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas (FPOG) Bonny of denying students of Bonny origin the opportunity to contest in the institution’s Student Union Government (SUG) election.
In a statement made available to Kristina Reports on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 in Bonny, Rivers State, and signed by its National President, Precious Jumbo, NUBS stated that the institution cancelled the SUG election because it resisted the management’s attempt to allegedly foist a Yoruba student unopposed in the institution as SUG President.

“We are compelled to address an incident that occurred today, 9th September, 2025 in the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas (FPOG), Bonny, being the proposed date for their Student Union Government (SUG) Elections.”
“On Thursday, 4th Sept. 2025, we got a call that the only two Bonny student aspirants contesting to serve as SUG President were disqualified from the electoral race by the Rector.”
“Following this development, our President, Comrade Precious Jumbo, led other Bonny students to appeal to the Rector, pleading for the reinstatement of the disqualified students.”
“However, the Rector maintained his stance and declined our request. He suggested projecting another student candidate, which led us to present another Bonny student aspirant for SUG President on Saturday 6th Sept, 2025.”
“Despite fulfilling all necessary requirements, including payment for the electoral form, was denied participation in the manifesto reading and the election process.”
“The Electoral Committee Chairman refused to accommodate her, citing unexplained reasons.”
The NUBS, therefore called on all relevant stakeholders to prevail on the FPOG management to ensure fair representation, equal opportunity, and provide a level playing ground for all interested students to participate in the SUG election.
“We are calling on the Minister of Education, the Rivers State Government, the Amanyanabo of Bonny Kingdom, Bonny Local Government Chairman, the Bonny Chiefs Council, and all other stakeholders to intervene and ensure a fair and democratic electoral process.”
When contacted, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Victor Okolobah denied the allegation of NUBS, stating that the election was suspended due to security concerns, asserting that he was unaware of the claims being made by NUBS.

“For security concerns on the SUG election, the management committee of the Polytechnic took a decision to suspend the SUG election until further notice.”
Kristina Reports will continue to give updates on developments regarding the election as events unfold.
