Paris 2024: Meet Mariam Bolaji, Chigozie Nnanna, Nigeria’s Historic Badminton Duo at the Paralympics

For the first time in Nigerian history, two athletes will represent the country in the badminton event at the Paralympic Games. Mariam Bolaji and Chigozie Nnanna have showcased a high level of devotion and prowess in the sport over the years, earning them a deserved spot in the prestigious event.

Born September 21, 2005, in Kwara State, Nigeria’s badminton sensation, Mariam Bolaji, will take part in the Women’s Singles Standing Lower 3 (WS SL3) category designed for those with lower limb impairment, when competitive action gets underway on Wednesday, August 29, 2024.

Originally from Ibadan, The consistent and passionate 18-year-old began her sports career playing tennis before she was scouted by Para badminton coach Bello Oyebanji of blessed memory who saw her potential to thrive in Badminton and encouraged her to switch sports.

Mariam has had an impressive build-up to the Paralympics, her most recent success was at the Spanish Para-Badminton International 2024 where she won her second Spanish International gold medal since making her debut in 2021, against highly experienced Oksana Kozyna who is ranked world number six. At the Egypt Para Badminton International 2024, she also won gold.

Mariam also had a stellar 2023, clinching gold in two major tournaments: the Uganda Para International 2023 and the Africa Para Championships 2023. She also emerged triumphant in the 5th Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2023, clinching the gold medal.

Sharing her thoughts on qualifying for the Paralympics, Mariam stated that participating is not enough, as she revealed her longing for a medal placement.

“I am very happy to represent Nigeria and Africa in Paris and I know that I need to keep the same tempo in order to achieve my goal.

“This was a lifetime goal to be participating in the Paralympic Games and I know that participating is not enough, but I am thirsty for a medal, and I know that with proper preparation and training, I will be able to obtain a decent result.”

“As of now, I am extremely happy, and I need to take this opportunity to fine-tune myself before this prestigious games. I wish to thank everyone who has supported me and believed in me.”

Her Philosophy: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.”

Nigeria’s second badminton representative and African Champion Chigozie Nnanna, is a testament to grit and tenacity. Born November 26, 2001, and currently ranked 16th in the Men’s Singles Standing Lower 4 (MS SL4) category, Nnanna is hoping to have a good outing and hopefully create history in Paris.

Building up to the Paralympics Games, the 22-year-old put up a showing at the Egypt Para-Badminton International 2024, reaching the finals and his quarterfinal appearance at the NSDF Royal Beach Cliff BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2024.

Mariam and Bolaji are both coached by Spain’s Dina Sarinena who has played an integral role in shaping the pair to be formidable competitors on the global stage. They would be looking to have a memorable outing as they make their Paralympics debut after a stellar season leading up to the games.
