As Nigeria marks another Independence Day today, October 1st, the celebration of freedom reminds us of a deeper truth: independence is not just for nations, it is also for individuals. True independence is the ability to stand tall, make choices with dignity, and chart a future free from unnecessary bondage. For the girl child, this lesson carries an urgent call.

Too many young girls are pressured by society’s obsession with appearances and material things. The race for luxury designer clothes, flashy lifestyles, and quick wealth, has pushed many into situations that rob them of their peace, dignity, and future. But what good is luxury if it comes at the cost of your sanity? What use is comfort if it chains you in regret?

Independence is about freedom, and for the girl child, freedom must include financial freedom. It is better to work hard, build steadily, and create a life of value than to waste precious years chasing shadows in the name of status. The girl child must learn that true wealth is not in flaunting luxury but in securing peace of mind, self-respect, and a future that cannot be stolen.

Nigeria’s independence was not handed over on a platter, it was fought for. In the same way, every girl child must fight to build her life, to claim her freedom, and to make choices that preserve her future. The path may seem slow, but it is sure. Hard work, education, creativity, and resilience are tools of independence that no one can take away.
